Tax season has arrived. You should start receiving tax documents from employers (W-2), banks and brokers (1099 DIV, 1099 INT, etc.) in the next couple of weeks. Start to gather that information in one place. You should also have a copy of your last tax return available. Whether you file yourself or hire a professional, these are good steps to make your tax preparation and filing go smoothly.

If you are choosing a tax professional, make sure you do your homework. All paid tax preparers must have a current Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). This is issued by the IRS. Preparers can have additional certifications (CPA, Lawyer and Enrolled Agent). You can go to IRS.GOV to find tax preparers in your area. You can also search the IRS website to find authorized EFiler's.
